About Amahl and the Night Visitors:  A new holiday tradition tells the story of the night the three kings, following the star to Bethlehem, stop to rest at the home of Amahl, a poor, crippled shepherd boy and his widowed mother. As the kings are welcomed into the home, they speak about their long journey to give gifts to a wondrous child. During their stay, the kings tell Amahl a tale about a kingdom “built on love alone.” Inspired by the kings’ tale, Amahl gives up a simple gift for the newborn child. Then, a miracle happens…
Amahl's gift to the newborn King will transform everyone's lives while Gian Carlo Menotti’s music is sure to move you. Amahl, a family-friendly show running just under an hour and performed in English, will place special emphasis on the message of giving during the holiday season. The show will be designed and directed by Affiliate Artist Joachim Schamberger and received a $100,000 grant from the LDI 100th Anniversary Celebration Cultural Partnership Gift Program. Schamberger returns to Indianapolis Opera as designer/director after successes with The Tragedy of Carmen and Faust and will be utilizing his signature digital set designs once again. Additionally, the cast includes Noah Boehm, a member of The Indianapolis Children’s Choir, singing Amahl and Elizabeth Batton, who will be singing as the mother. Darren Stokes, Mark Gilgallon and David Manell will be returning to sing the role of the three kings.

About 2012-2013 Indianapolis Opera
A combination of grand and modern operas will be performed during Indianapolis Opera’s 37th season, at both Clowes Memorial Hall and the Frank and Katrina Basile Opera Center. From Akhnaten, a new partnership with the Indiana University Opera and Ballet Theater, to Amahl and the Night Visitors, a new holiday tradition, to the eerie story of The Flying Dutchman, this season’s lineup offers something for everyone. Akhnaten and Amahl and the Night Visitors, both 20th century operas, provide viewers a glimpse of performances composed in both the past and present, in comparison to 19th century The Flying Dutchman. Indianapolis Opera is also announcing a new strategic partnership with the Indiana University Opera and Ballet Theater. Additionally, IO has recently appointed stage director and designer Joachim Schamberger as an Affiliate Artist for the 2012-2013 season. Tickets will be reduced in price this season. Season subscribers will also receive 20 percent off of additional tickets and other conveniences.
